João Ferreira de AlmeidaAnnes or Ioaõ Ferreira Annes d'Almeida or Yoam Ferreira Annesd'Almeida was an important personality of Portuguese Protestantism, especially known for translating the Bible into Portuguese.Son of Catholic parents, John Adams was born in Tavares towerlocation, Mangualde municipality, in Portugal. He was orphaned as achild and came to be created in Lisbon by an uncle who was a memberof a religious order. Little is known about the childhood and earlyadolescence of Almeida, but states that he would have received anexcellent education with a view to entering the priesthood. It isnot known what would have taken Almeida out of Portugal but maybethat was due to the strong influence of the Inquisition inPortugal. She traveled to Holland and, at age 14, embarked forAsia, through Batavia, on Java island, Indonesia. At that time,Batavia was the administrative center of the Dutch East IndiaCompany in Southeast Asia. When sailing between Batavia and Malacca in Malaysia, Almeida, the 14-year-old read a Protestant pamphlet in Spanish entitled"Diferencias de la Cristandad". This pamphlet attacking some of thedoctrines and Catholic concepts, including the use of languagesincomprehensible to the common people, such as Latin, duringreligious services. This caused a great effect on Almeida and, coming to Malacca, he converted to the Dutch Reformed Church in1642, and devoted himself immediately to the translation ofexcerpts from the Gospels from Spanish into Portuguese. Two years later, King James was released a huge project:translating the New Testament into Portuguese using as the basis ofthe Gospels and the New Testament Letters in Spanish translation ofReyna Valera, 1569. Almeida also used as sources in thistranslation of the Latin versions (Beza), French (Geneva, 1588) andItalian (Diodati, 1641). The work was completed in less than a yearwhen Almeida was only 16 years old. Completed in 1645, thistranslation was not published. But the translator made copies byhand labor, which were sent to the congregations of Malacca,Batavia and Ceylon (now Sri Lanka). Despite his youth, he sent acopy of the text to the Dutch governor-general in Batavia. It isbelieved that the copy would have been sent to but Amsterdamresponsible for the text of the publication died resulting in thedisappearance of Adams work. In 1651, when a copy of yourtranslation you be requested to the Reformed Church on the islandof Ceylon, Almeida discovered that the original had vanished.Darting back to work, from a copy or earlier drafts of his work,Almeida completed the following year a revised version of theGospels and the book of Acts of the Apostles. In 1654, he completedthe New Testament but, again, nothing was done to print thetranslation, being held only a few handwritten copies.
